The primary cause of pavement failure in the US today is the contamination of base materials and the resulting loss of base strength. This normally happens when subgrade soils migrate up into the aggregate base. Over time and repeated traffic cycles, support for vehicle axle loads diminishes leading to premature pavement failure. Geotextiles provide a cost effective separation layer between the subbase and base materials while providing an element of stabilization.

Soil fine will travel with flowing water and eventually plug drainage pipe and stone channels. The use of nonwoven fabrics will prevent soils from entering the drainage path but still allow water to flow freely.
